Everyone applying for their first job faces the same problem: every job asks for experience, but how do you get experience without a job? The answer is that you almost certainly have more relevant material than you think — you just need to know how to present it. Here's how to build a strong fresher resume in 2026.

The mindset shift: experience is broader than work history

When freshers say they have "no experience", they usually mean no full-time employment. But ATS systems and recruiters also value projects, internships, freelance work, volunteering, coursework, and relevant certifications. Your task is to present these in a format that signals competence for the role you're targeting. For the Indian job market specifically, see our dedicated fresher resume guide for India.

Structure your fresher resume correctly

For freshers, move Education above Work Experience since it's your strongest signal. A good structure is: Summary → Education → Projects / Internships → Skills → Certifications → Activities (optional). This puts your most relevant information where recruiters look first.

Writing your summary as a fresher

Don't skip the summary because you think you have nothing to say. Write 2–3 lines stating your degree, target role, and 2–3 relevant strengths or project highlights. Example: "Computer Science graduate with hands-on experience in Python and data analysis through academic projects and a 3-month internship. Built a demand forecasting model that reduced inventory errors by 18%. Looking to apply analytical skills in a data analyst role." Making the most of projects

Projects are gold for freshers. For each project, write 2–3 bullet points describing: what you built or did, which tools or technologies you used, and what the outcome or impact was (even an estimated one). Example: "Built a sentiment analysis tool using Python and NLTK that classified 10,000 product reviews with 87% accuracy. Presented findings to a panel of 4 professors as part of final year coursework."

Internships and part-time work

Even a 1-month internship counts. Treat it exactly like a job: list the company, your role, dates, and 2–3 bullet points with action verbs and outcomes. If you worked part-time in an unrelated field, still include it — it shows reliability, communication, and the ability to manage responsibilities alongside studying.

Building a strong skills section

Only list skills you can actually talk about in an interview. Group them: Technical Skills (tools, languages, platforms), Soft Skills (communication, teamwork), and Certifications. Prioritize skills mentioned in your target job description. Use CV Chackr to compare your skills section against a specific job description and see what's missing. Certifications that actually help

Short online certifications from Google, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or NASSCOM show initiative. Pick ones relevant to your target role. For tech roles: Google Data Analytics, AWS Cloud Practitioner, or Meta Front-End Developer. For marketing: Google Ads, HubSpot Inbound, or Semrush SEO. For HR: LinkedIn HR Fundamentals or SHRM courses.

Keep it to one page and test it

A fresher resume must be one page. If it's longer, cut older or less relevant items. Once done, upload it to CV Chackr with your target job description to check your ATS score and see which keywords to add. Most freshers improve their score significantly with just 3–4 targeted keyword additions.
